Carmilla.: Variety Show Night #1, Camp Myrtlewood (Day 2)

I woke up right before the rickrolling started. I appreciate the tradition but, I’m still glad to already be awake when it starts. I got on the swings as the rickrollers were about to reach the field. Breakfast was very calm (once I got outside of the dining hall). It’s always nice to see my friends first thing in the morning.

Morning meeting was pretty routine except for the picture of Guy larb John taped to the alter and the giant puddle of mud. It is Elijah’s birthday and he asked that everyone wear capes. I have seen several creative capes. Some examples are: a piece of paper tied on with clear string, a scarf, and a flannel shirt tied around someone’s shoulders. Today was the day to bring our Covid tests to advisee. I am in Nathan’s advisee group. Everyone is pretty calm and quiet which, I really appreciate. For the first workshop, I went to see the new Dogwood and the new bathrooms. The whole group got to go out on the new Dogwood deck which, will eventually be screened in and used as a sleeping porch. There is also an amazing new oven in the building that has electric coils built in. It also has a heated bench on one side. The stone acts as sound insulation from the other side of the room for people who get overwhelmed easily. The oven also continues to stay warm for up to 48 hours after being turned off. The new showers are much bigger than ADA compliance requires and even have large built in cubbies to hold soaps.

After the tour, I ran to the fire-pit and back (with some walking breaks) because I was told that my superheroes shift was later. I ate lunch with one of my friends, then I sat down to work on writing this for a while. I just went to Nathan’s workshop called On Bullsh!t. It was very interesting. The idea is that bullsh!t is a statement made with no concern for the truth, a statement made to manipulate emotions, or in order to sell something (which can be a nonphysical thing). It’s been like this for a while but, it seems like the wind just picked up. I just saw a yoga mat blow across the field like a lonely pink tumbleweed. The triage tent has been blown over for at least the second time.

I decided to go to the sound scape ecology workshop. It was very interesting and I learned a lot about how humans perceive sound. The group also got to see a curious chipmunk and a large family of newts. When I got back, I investigated and found that it took me 1 minute and 38 seconds to walk from the lodge to the ramp of Laurel at a fairly slow pace. I didn’t eat dinner at the normal time because I wasn’t feeling very well. I missed part of community check in due to a bout of very extreme anxiety. Because of that, I mostly stayed with one of my friends for the rest of the evening. I was able to eat at that point so, I got some food and watched the talent show. Everyone was amazing and I wish there could be something like that every night of camp. I won’t go to into depth here (because I am tired, and it is currently 11:17 pm, and I yearn for my bed). I’ve also included some photos that I decided fit this post well from throughout the day.
