Aaliyah: Camp Myrtlewood (Day 10)

Today was, in my opinion, one of the best days of camp. It started off with morning meeting as always, and it happened to be a special day for someone, something we are all very familiar with at this point. It was someone’s birthday (we’ve had at least four others by this point). For each birthday, they can make a request of the camp for that day. Today was that we call them Lord *insert name* and follow all their rules and decrees, basically that they be dictator for a day. The number of wanted posters and propaganda that went up around camp was insane. They even had Enforcers, aka security and enforcement type thing who ratted people out when they broke a rule. To be clear, these were incredibly stupid and harmless rules like “All hats must be worn incorrectly”, things like that.
There were tons of workshops in every slot, and it was very hard to not go to some of them. I did two dance workshops which were incredibly fun, if tiring. I’ve always been self conscious dancing, particularly in front of or around people, so these got me out of my comfort zone a bit but we’re very fun. They didn’t feel so much getting out of my comfort zone because this is NBTSC, and it feels safer and less like you’ll be judged than any other place in the world. And you know you aren’t the only one who’s nervous.

I also got something very cute from my Fairy Godparent. Basically everyone who wants to participate puts their name in a bowl, and then when everyone has done that, draws one out. It’s sort of like a secret Santa type thing, except it extends for all of camp. You have no idea who your Fairy Godparent is. They might put cute things on your clothespin (inter camp mail basically), send you a hug or a cup of tea, etc. It’s very fun and cute and helps make little connections.

The evening event was the second talent show, and boy is everyone at camp talented!! It’s always so fun to watch people show off what they can do, step out of their comfort zone, and embrace themselves and what they can do.
