Desmond Lee: Staff Orientation Day 2, Farm and Wilderness

There’s no place like home they say… And it’s true. I could say the exact same for NBTSC. I’m excited to spend my 4th year here in Vermont as Night Owl. I’m particularly excited to see the familiar camper faces that I’ve made friends with since my very first day working here way back in 2018.

It was a bit of a tricky task traveling to Vermont this year for me. I bought my train tickets for the wrong date and ended up in Vermont 2 days early. I had to spend emergency money for a motel room and for some reason I could not seem to find an Uber driver for the life of me so I really had no choice but to make the hour walk from the station to the hotel. It was a treacherous walk with many hills, sidewalks disappearing leaving you too close to the road or in awkward position in a field right next to the road, and not to mention a couple of fast drivers zooming past you at uncomfortable distances.

I was very relieved to make it to my motel room and was even more relieved when I finally arrived at camp. The adventures have already begun for some of us and camp hasn’t even started yet. This hectic start to my annual trip inspired me to set a specific intention for this year’s camp session and that intention is to explore and adventure more. I want to see parts of our camp I haven’t seen yet and this I’ve already managed to do. Nothing too crazy just a few hikes along paths I haven’t seen before.

I want to use this camp session as an opportunity to break out any shell I have that may be restricting me from living to the fullest and I am convinced exploration and adventures could help break me out of that shell.

I’m super excited for this year and for camp magic to happen!
