The day started for me with the five and a half hour drive to camp, however it didn’t really start until i stepped out of the car at Camp Myrtlewood. I got there fairly early so I took some time to myself to re-acquaint myself with this beautiful place. It feels surreal to finally be back!
Once the bus arrived it was a mob of hugs, hellos and introductions. Lots of new faces mixed in with the familiar ones. Cabin orientation and welcoming circle passed in a blur of excitement and nervousness.
We split into our advisee groups and ate dinner while getting to know each other. Soon enough, it was time for the opening ceremony at the campfire circle.
There is something truly magical about the slow, silent walk through the dark, holding hands as the hum of singing passes its way down the line. I don’t remember everything that was said, but what I do remember is the intense feeling of belonging, the feeling that this is exactly where I need to be right now. My biggest hope for camp this year is to help others experience that same sense of belonging.
