Beatrice B: Prom, Farm and Wilderness

I woke up in Frida’s. I slept in a row with Zoe, Esmé, Pearl, and Avi. There were lots of others who slept in Frida’s as well. After wakeup call I stayed in my sleeping bag for a while because I was very cozy. For breakfast we had the most delicious banana bread ever with some tofu scramble and potatoes. I went back for seconds of the banana bread because it was so, so good!

At morning meeting we gave suggestions for next year’s prom theme and we said goodbye to Hallie who had been volunteering. At advisee we paired up and did check in with our partner, and then circle up again and did our partner’s check in for them. I got to pair with Avi. Then we split into 2 groups and did a scavenger hunt!

In workshop block #1 I went to Sierra and Will’s partner dance workshop which I had been hoping for. I had a very nice time. Then I went and did my superhero which is sweeping the cozy lodge. For lunch we had grilled cheese and tomato soup. The grilled cheese was amazing. While I ate I sat at Larkin’s police and prison abolition lunch discussion.

During Siesta I showered with Avi, Elijah, Esmé, Umoja, and Elke. It was very nice to have company to help me through the glacier that is the camp showers when they’re cold (which they were). Then I went back to my cabin with Umoja and Esmé who are my cabin mates. We brushed our teeth which we hadn’t done yet because we had said we’d do it after breakfast, which didn’t happen. We walked to the field together and stopped and talked to Saskia and Javier for a bit before they went to nap. Then I sat by some people who were making prom decorations while I started writing this blog post.

Prom is train/rodent/subway-rat themed, so they were making things out of NYC metro cards that Zoe had brought, and train signage. Then I went to listen to the music that was being suggested for prom. During workshop block #3 I went to play Silent Football, captained by Ben! It was very fun. I had missed playing it at camp, and was very excited that Ben was doing it. Silent Football is a game with a lot of rules and taddling on people when they break them, it is neither silent nor football, and it includes lots of laughing. Definitely one of my favorite group games.

Then, I went to the questions anonymous panel run by staff. It was interesting. My favorite question they got asked was “what is your favorite camp memory?”. For dinner we had burrito bowls which were very good. Then we had check in + evening meeting. During evening meeting we got to vote on the prom theme for next year! The options were Pirates on The High Seas, Geometry, and Disco. I voted for Pirates on The High Seas and Geometry. Pirates won!! Then we got to go get dressed for subway-rat prom. My outfit consisted of a waistcoat with the NYC subway A train symbol sewn onto the back, a conductor hat, a blue button up, and black pants. I picked some flowers to put on my hat. I had also made necklaces out of my old Thomas The Tank Engine train and let others wear them. I painted some people’s nails and my own, and then walked the rat-walk into prom!

Prom was very, very fun and I had an amazing time! There was lots of dancing and singing and jumping. And lots of people dressed up as rats and mice and train conductors. The songs were great. My legs got very tired so I sat down for a bit and then danced some more and then went to the lodge and sat in front of the fireplace. Then Avi and I went to Frida’s to get our bedding and bring it to our cabins because we wanted to sleep in our cabins that night. Then we went back to the lodge and sat in front of the fire and chatted with some others more. I asked Syd what it was like junior staffing and being the logistics junior staff. I got some interesting inside info. Then I went back to my cabin with Esmé and Umoja and we went to bed. I was very cozy and warm because I put my quilt on top of my sleeping bag.
